Bitcoin's history paved its way in early 1980s when the algorithms running behind modern cryptocurrencies were developed. In 1990, a proto-cryptocurrency named Bit Gold was introduced which was said to be much similar in nature to current Bitcoin. The first official Bitcoin was launched in 2008 anonymously by the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin’s open-source software was released in January 2009, kick starting the public mining and trading.
