Smart grid has a relatively recent history. Automatic meter reading devices integrated in the 1970s were the beginning of meters which gave information back to the utility, an essential requirement of any smart grid system. The technology used for managing sensors and relaying the pertinent data grew out of the caller-ID technology which was patented by Theodore Paraskevakos. These were the initial steps of Smart Grid.
