The transition from traditional to smart grids took place owing to many reasons. A smart grid provides several reasons and the movement from traditional electric grids to smart grids is facilitated by various factors, evolutions in metering, the deregulation of the energy market, variations on the level of electricity production, changing regulations, decentralisation (distributed energy), the advent of the involved consumer and the rise of microgeneration.
