CRM or Customer Relationship Management and Marketing Automation, though related due to their purpose of generating new businesses and maintaining the existing client base, are very different function wise. Customer Relationship Management involves managing interaction and communication with existing and prospective customers during the sales process. Hence, CRM is primarily meant to support the sales division. Marketing Automation is the technology based segment of CRM. It is used to drive business through online channels like email campaigns, social media, chatbots etc.
