A biometric system is composed of four main components:

  • A Sensing Unit or Biometric Sensor: This is used to input the biological data and convert it into digital form for further processing. There may be several type of biometric sensors like optical sensors, voice recognition microphones, etc.
  • Processing Unit: This is a computer that processes the digital sample from the sensors to match data for authentication
  • Database: It stores the biometric data, that can be stored in the form of Random Access Memory (RAM), flash EPROM, or a data server.
  • Output Unit: The output interface communicates the decision of the biometric system to enable the access to the user.
